First: the good. This rendering is giving me a little glimmer of hope that someday we will get this kitchen lookin’ good.
Next up: the bad. They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. This kitchen needed an overhaul to become the heart of our home. We envisioned not just a kitchen that’s more in keeping with our design style, but one that’s more functional and spacious.
And when we say functional we mean we’d like to actually be able to use all of the doors and drawers. We were only able to use this drawer when the dishwasher was completely open. We also couldn’t open the doors above the fridge because they ran into the fridge door hinges. I also knew I wanted to say goodbye forever to the lazy Susan with glass front door, the plate holders aka dust collector and the slide out spice cabinet (those things irritate me in a big way - I want to see the front of my spices, not the tops).
I have done so much research during the year long design of this kitchen, I mean SO much. Details matter to me in a big way. Even though it never fails that you wish you would have included something after living in it a while, I always like to take my time and write down everything I don’t want to forget to include.
Here is the best inspo I have found for this wall. Built-in panel ready fridge on the left, walk-in hidden pantry storage on the right.

And now for the ugly: tile demo. Yep, it was a mess. And unfortunately the crew we hired to demo, threw their hands up in defeat after about 10 minutes of trying. So…lesson learned: sometimes it’s best to just buy the tool and DIY. And, of course, have the kids pitch in to help. That work ethic is going to serve them well.
But we can’t end on that note. Here’s a little inspo we’ve been saving along the way from some of our faves.

Stay tuned for more progress. We can’t wait to be able to use our kitchen again!
