I finally made a decision on the stairs and I’m excited and nervous at the same time. We decided on post to post instead of over the post and a mix of black painted wooden balusters, black painted posts and natural white oak handrail. Now that the decision is made and materials are here, it’s time to demo.
Here are a couple of views of the stairs when we bought this house eight months ago. I knew right away this isn’t the look I was going for. The stairs are the first thing that is seen when walking in the front door and gives a glimpse of our entire home right away. In these photos, the glimpse screams a style that is definitely not mine. When making a house our home, I always think it’s fun to completely transform a space into our own personal style and what fits our family.
Our boys helped demo our stairs in our last house five years ago and they certainly didn't want to miss the demo of these.
After the boys demoed the balusters, Tom started on the treads. We removed the red oak treads because we are installing 5” white oak select flooring in this home and going with a natural finish and want the treads to match perfectly.
Tom has been working on the stairs almost every night and weekend with a kidney stone for almost 3 weeks so we got pretty used to walking up and down a 2” skirt board.
And here’s where we are. Eeek, can’t wait to see the posts, handrail and balusters go in this week.
